Review - The Scars That Define Us (The Devil's Dust #2) by M.N. Forgy

REVIEW:

There is no secret that the bad boys are the dream of every woman (let say almost, for those who don’t recognize that to themselves yet). To avoid any misunderstanding, when I said bad boys I didn’t say bad person. There is big difference between these two terms and this difference is one of the foundations of the MC (Motorcycle Club) novels, the novels that are in full bloom in our day romance literature and the new-ish package for the bad boys’ delivery.

Another characteristic of today literature is, I said that before, the personal intense drama hidden in the characters’ past. Of course, we don’t want to read about ordinary situations, but from here to the exaggerations that make plots implausible, even if we know that life offered many time more horrific examples, is a long way and many authors forget to stop at the right moment. Fortunately, from my point of view, that it’s not the case with the first two books of Devil’s Dust series.

The story is shared between the love stories (evident) and the personal evolution of the characters. I didn’t specify which ones because every person in these books has one, everybody has a starting and an arriving point. Their ways will be decided in principal only by their own free will, thus the same starting point will have different arriving ones.
The characters, main or secondary, are various and intense. The male characters are the “living” proof of the difference between bad boy and bad person and both type of guys will influence in a more or less dramatic way the life of our heroine.

Personally I don’t like the superficial stories, the ones that you cannot find a substrate or something to think about, so I was happy when I found in DD what I was looking for. One of the things that I liked is the parallel between Shadow and Bobby (the third volume it will be his) and I could indicate here even one of the dilemma of the criminology: the source of the criminal behavior – society/family or genetic predisposition. The same aspect is interesting also about the heroine. I don’t know if that was Mrs. Forgy’s intention, but she played well the cards and didn’t do something by which to contradict what she built before.

I said love stories because, even if we have the principal one that will keep the reader really anxious, between Shadow and Dani, love is the element that triggers, influences everything, the one which turns the wheel of events. Old, new, shared, hidden, good or ill, you will find many kinds of love and their effects. And, even if the MC life wants to escape from the social customs and rules, it cannot escape from love. Love, or lack of it, will change people and make them bend or break the rules, even those to which they freely choose to obey. Also, love is the one that could put the woman back in the leading position (MCs have special rules about the woman status) and to prove once again the saying (in an approximately translation): the men rule the world and the women rule the men.

These love stories will find their ways between the MC’s rules, fervid emotions, love and lust, good intentions and bad deeds, suspense, danger and death. All of these elements will change the course of the events, will broke hearts and bring new possibilities to test your outlaw acceptance boundaries, because when we talk about MC literature we talk about blurred lines and own rules.

Only one recommendation: It will be better to read the volumes in order because they not only form a whole, but they complete, motivate and explain each other.

About the author:
M.N. Forgy was raised in Missouri where she still lives with her family. She's a soccer mom by day and a saucy writer by night. M.N. Forgy started writing at a young age but never took it seriously until years later, as a stay-at-home mom, she opened her laptop and started writing again. As a role model for her children, she felt she couldn't live with the "what if" anymore and finally took a chance on her character's story. So, with her glass of wine in hand and a stray Barbie sharing her seat, she continues to create and please her fans.
